ABOUT ANGITHI.com

What is Angithi?

Angithi is a Hindi (Indian) word and it means Clay oven. In the past, cooking was done in these types of oven in India. Due to unavailability of gas and electricity the main source of energy for these oven was coal. The oven was lighted early in the morning and was left outside in the open for the coal to get ignited and hot. The food cooked on these types of oven had a different flavor and it tasted very tasty. As time passed by and gas, electricity became easily available everywhere, these types of oven are very hard to find and are now usually found in rural villages in some part of India.

So now you have an idea what has Angithi to do with Angithi.com. We are not suggesting to do it the hard way, but if you follow the easy instructions you should be able to prepare a delicious meal for someone you care, love, or want to please. Most of the recipes and tips are based on actual food prepared at home.

The main purpose of this site was to share the tasty recipes with all of you. We at Angithi would like to listen to your comments and suggestion. Do send us feedback.

How did it Start?
Well it was Summer of 98. My parents were visiting from India. I like to eat so I was after my mother to cook good food. Anyway since I also loved to cook I told my dad to write all the recipes in a diary so that I will be able to cook once they leave back to India.

My Dad was very much into using computers and he loved working on a computer, could be anything from browsing Internet to even writing my business letters. So I mentioned to him that instead of using a pen and paper to write the Recipe use the Keyboard and the computer. I designed a very simple ACCESS database (I am a Software Engg.) and created a nice looking form and gave it to him. So in few days I saw that he has written like 20 recipes. WOW!!

Also during the same time dot com boom was going on and I wanted to learn all the Web technology, so I picked up the ASP Professional book and started reading it. By the time I reached chapter 2 (after 2 weeks) I thought this will not work, I have to create a website to learn ASP and other web technology (I believe in practical work then theoretical). Now for any website you need content (data), that means you need a database. Then came the bright idea of using the Recipe database for all the content. I started creating couple of ASP pages pulling data from the Recipe database and wow I had created a small Indian recipe website.

And today after working on it for few years I have developed a full fledged website with lots of Indian Recipe and lots of features etc.

Now you must be thinking What about the Recipes? Well most of the Recipes belong to my mother. But the nice thing about this site is any body can be a contributor.

Anyway have fun and do leave us a feedback, because I love feedbacks.
